How ACA Subsidies Work

1

Your income is compared to the FPL

The federal poverty level for your household size determines how much subsidy you qualify for.

2

A "required contribution" is calculated

The ACA caps what you must pay as a percent of income — for 2026 that runs from 2.1% up to 9.96%, and stops applying above 400% of the federal poverty level. That cap is your monthly bill.

3

The government pays the rest

The difference between the benchmark Silver plan cost and your cap is paid directly to the insurer as a tax credit.

Common Income Examples (Single Adult, Age 40)

$20,000~128%~$35/mo~$385/mo
$30,000~192%~$155/mo~$265/mo
$40,000~256%~$287/mo~$133/mo
$55,000~351%~$420/monone
$70,000~447%~$420/monone

Based on a national average benchmark Silver plan for age 40, using the 2026 applicable percentage table. Above 400% of the federal poverty level there is no premium tax credit at all. Actual premiums vary by state and county.
