Getting Dental Coverage Without an Employer in Citrus County
Citrus County draws retirees to its Gulf Coast springs and nature parks — a community where standalone dental insurance is essential for the many residents who are pre-Medicare retirees or seniors supplementing limited Medicare dental benefits.
Working for yourself means no group dental plan to join. Under the ACA, dental care is an essential health benefit for children but not for adults. Of the 106 health plans sold in Citrus County for 2026, from Ambetter Health, Florida Blue (BlueCross BlueShield FL), Florida Blue HMO (a BlueCross BlueShield FL company) and one other, none is required to include adult dental coverage.
What to Look for in a Self-Employed Dental Plan in Citrus County
Compare dental plans on what they pay, not just what they cost: the annual maximum, the deductible, the waiting periods for basic and major work, and whether your dentist is in the network.
Check waiting periods before you buy. HealthCare.gov notes that separate dental plans can have waiting periods before they cover services for adults; on SecureDental PLUS, basic care waits 1 month and major care and orthodontia 12 months, while cleanings have no wait.
No website can reliably tell you which dentists in Citrus County take a particular plan. Offices join and leave networks, so search the plan’s provider directory by the dentist’s name and ZIP code, then call the office to confirm.
Dental Insurance as a Business Expense in Florida
If you’re self-employed, dental premiums for yourself, a spouse and dependents generally count toward the self-employed health insurance deduction, which can’t exceed your business’s net profit, isn’t available for months you could join an employer-subsidized plan, and cuts income tax but not self-employment tax. Health premiums usually dominate it; in Citrus County a 40-year-old’s 2026 benchmark Silver plan is $702 a month before any tax credit.
S corporation owners with more than 2% of the company can still take the deduction, but only after the corporation pays or reimburses the premiums and includes them in the owner’s W-2 wages.
HealthCare.gov only sells a dental plan together with a health plan (Citrus County has 106 to choose from for 2026), during Open Enrollment or a special enrollment period. Outside the Marketplace there is no enrollment window for stand-alone dental, and coverage usually starts the first of the next month. Enter your ZIP code in the form below and Daniel will send you the dental plans available where you live.
A stand-alone dental plan is an excepted benefit: it isn’t minimum essential coverage and doesn’t replace health insurance.
Call (713) 575-9904 and Daniel will price the dental plans available at your Citrus County ZIP code and check the network for you.
