Short answer: an individual dental plan pays for cleanings from day one, fillings after a short wait and major work after a year, up to a yearly maximum of about $1,000 to $2,000. A good individual plan costs about $45 a month, plus association dues where they apply. It isn’t priced by age, and you can buy one in any month. What an Individual Dental Plan Pays
The plan Daniel places most often, SecureDental PLUS from Freedom Life Insurance Company of America, comes in three tiers. Every tier has a $50 deductible per person, capped at three people per family.
| Saver | Saver Plus | Premium | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cleanings and exams (in network) | 100% | 100% | 100% |
| Fillings and other basic care | 60% | 70% | 80% |
| Crowns, bridges and other major care | Discount only | 60% | 70% |
| Orthodontia | Discount only | Discount only | 70%, up to $500 a year and $1,500 lifetime |
| Most it pays in a year | $1,000 | $1,500 | $2,000 |
Percentages are what the plan pays after the deductible. Plan details vary by state.
When Each Benefit Starts
- Cleanings and exams: the first day.
- Basic care such as fillings: after 1 month.
- Major care and orthodontia: after 12 months.
So an individual plan works best bought before you need the big work. If you already need a crown, the plan will not pay for it for a year. How dental waiting periods work.
What It Costs
In August 2026 the Premium tier was quoted at $44.63 a month for one adult in Texas on the National Options PPO 30 network. Where the plan is issued through the sponsoring association, add a $7.95 monthly association fee and a $10 one-time fee; in some states that doesn’t apply. Two points surprise people:
- Age doesn’t change the price. Quoted side by side, a 25-year-old and a 40-year-old on the same tier pay the same.
- The tier and network set the price, so the cheapest tier costs less mainly because it pays less for major work.
If you are self-employed, dental premiums count toward the self-employed health insurance deduction.

Other Ways to Get Dental Coverage
- With a marketplace health plan. Some marketplace plans include dental, and you can add a separate marketplace dental plan, but only while buying a health plan. Adult dental isn’t an essential health benefit, so most plans leave it out.
- Through an employer, if you have one.
- A dental discount plan. It isn’t insurance: you pay a membership and get reduced prices, with no waiting period and no yearly maximum. Insurance vs a discount plan.
Stand-alone dental plans are excepted benefits under federal law. They don’t count as health coverage under the ACA and never replace a medical plan. What the yearly maximum means · dental and vision for the self-employed.
