Getting Dental Coverage Without an Employer in Indian River County

Indian River County, anchored by Vero Beach, is a prosperous retirement and second-home community on Florida's Treasure Coast — many residents are retirees who need standalone dental coverage since Medicare doesn't cover routine dental care.

Without an employer plan, dental coverage is something you arrange yourself. Health insurance and dental insurance are separate purchases for most adults, because adult dental isn’t an ACA essential health benefit. Indian River County has 121 Marketplace health plans from seven insurers for 2026 (Ambetter Health, Cigna HealthCare of Florida, Inc. and 5 others), and none of them has to cover adult dental care.

What to Look for in a Self-Employed Dental Plan in Indian River County

Five numbers decide a self-employed dental plan: premium, deductible, annual maximum, waiting periods, and whether your dentist is in the network. The annual maximum, commonly $1,000 to $2,000, is the one people overlook.

Waiting periods are the catch. On SecureDental PLUS, cleanings are covered right away, fillings after 1 month, and crowns, bridges and orthodontia after 12 months, and HealthCare.gov warns that separate dental plans in general can have waiting periods for adults.

No website can reliably tell you which dentists in Indian River County take a particular plan. Offices join and leave networks, so search the plan’s provider directory by the dentist’s name and ZIP code, then call the office to confirm.

Dental Insurance as a Business Expense in Florida

For the self-employed, dental premiums usually qualify for the self-employed health insurance deduction. It lowers income tax, not self-employment tax, is capped at the business’s net profit, and is lost for any month you could have joined an employer-subsidized plan. The bigger line in that deduction is usually health cover: Indian River County’s 2026 benchmark Silver plan runs $591 a month for a 40-year-old before subsidies.

If you own more than 2% of an S corporation, the premiums generally have to be paid or reimbursed by the company and included in your W-2 wages before you can take the deduction. A CPA can set that up.

On HealthCare.gov you can only buy a Marketplace dental plan when you are buying a health plan at the same time, which in Indian River County means one of its 121 2026 plans. Outside the Marketplace there is no enrollment window for stand-alone dental, and coverage usually starts the first of the next month. A stand-alone dental plan is an excepted benefit: it isn’t minimum essential coverage and doesn’t replace health insurance.
