Dental Coverage for Lincoln County Families
Lincoln County is the fastest-growing county in South Dakota, anchoring Sioux Falls' southern suburban expansion — many new residents are young families and professionals who buy dental and vision coverage on their own.
For a family, the rules differ for the kids and the parents. Under the ACA, dental care is an essential health benefit for children but not for adults. Of the 41 health plans sold in Lincoln County for 2026, from Avera Health Plans and Sanford Health Plan, none is required to include adult dental coverage.
Adult Dental vs. Pediatric Dental in Lincoln County
Children and adults are treated differently: a Marketplace health plan must make dental coverage available for children 18 and under, in the plan itself or as a separate dental plan, while adult dental is optional. Under a family dental plan, each person’s claims count against their own deductible until the family cap is reached ($50 per person and $150 per family on SecureDental PLUS), and preventive care generally skips the deductible.

Before you choose a plan in Lincoln County, look up each family member’s dentist in the plan’s own provider directory and call the office to confirm it is in the specific network the plan uses. Networks change, and a practice can be in one insurer’s network but not another’s.
Braces are the most common surprise. On SecureDental PLUS they’re covered only on the Premium tier, at 70%, with a 12-month waiting period, a $500 yearly limit and a $1,500 lifetime limit, and many other plans don’t cover them at all.
Waiting periods are the catch. On SecureDental PLUS, cleanings are covered right away, fillings after 1 month, and crowns, bridges and orthodontia after 12 months, and HealthCare.gov warns that separate dental plans in general can have waiting periods for adults.
A dental plan pays dentists, not emergency rooms. If a tooth infection or a facial injury takes you to an emergency department, that bill goes to your health insurance.
