Dental Coverage for Monroe County Families
Monroe County — the Florida Keys — has an economy built entirely on tourism, diving, fishing, and hospitality — many working residents in the restaurant, hotel, and marine services industries do not receive employer dental benefits.
Families buy dental coverage for two different groups: children and adults. Adult dental care isn’t an essential health benefit under the ACA, so a health plan in Florida doesn’t have to include it. Monroe County has 33 Marketplace health plans from one insurer for 2026 (Florida Blue (BlueCross BlueShield FL)), and none of them has to cover adult dental care.
Adult Dental vs. Pediatric Dental in Monroe County
Children and adults are treated differently: a Marketplace health plan must make dental coverage available for children 18 and under, in the plan itself or as a separate dental plan, while adult dental is optional. Check which of Monroe County’s 33 2026 health plans already include children’s dental before you buy a separate plan for them.
A family dental plan covers each enrolled person under one policy, with the same preventive, basic and major classes of care as an individual plan. Deductibles usually apply per person with a family cap: $50 a person up to $150 a family on SecureDental PLUS.
Choosing a Family Dental Plan in Monroe County
The only reliable network check is the plan’s own provider directory, followed by a call to the office. Dental practices in Monroe County move in and out of networks, so do it before you enroll rather than after.
Braces are the most common surprise. On SecureDental PLUS they’re covered only on the Premium tier, at 70%, with a 12-month waiting period, a $500 yearly limit and a $1,500 lifetime limit, and many other plans don’t cover them at all.
If you already need a crown, the waiting period matters more than the premium. HealthCare.gov notes that separate dental plans can have waiting periods for adults, and SecureDental PLUS, for example, waits 12 months for major care and 1 month for basic care.
Know where the line sits: a dental plan covers care in a dentist’s chair, while an emergency department visit for a dental abscess or a jaw injury is a health insurance claim. Medicare’s hospital directory lists 3 hospitals with emergency services in Monroe County, including Fishermen's Community Hospital, Lower Keys Medical Center and Mariners Hospital. Two of the county’s hospitals are critical access hospitals, the small rural facilities Medicare designates to keep emergency care close.
