Getting Dental Coverage Without an Employer in Putnam County
Putnam County along the St. Johns River is one of Florida's more economically challenged rural counties — agriculture, timber, and limited retail employment define the economy, and many residents buy dental coverage on their own.

Waiting periods are the catch. On SecureDental PLUS, cleanings are covered right away, fillings after 1 month, and crowns, bridges and orthodontia after 12 months, and HealthCare.gov warns that separate dental plans in general can have waiting periods for adults.
Before you choose a plan in Putnam County, look up your dentist in the plan’s own provider directory and call the office to confirm it is in the specific network the plan uses. Networks change, and a practice can be in one insurer’s network but not another’s.
Dental Insurance as a Business Expense in Florida
If you’re self-employed, dental premiums for yourself, a spouse and dependents generally count toward the self-employed health insurance deduction, which can’t exceed your business’s net profit, isn’t available for months you could join an employer-subsidized plan, and cuts income tax but not self-employment tax. Health premiums usually dominate it; in Putnam County a 40-year-old’s 2026 benchmark Silver plan is $768 a month before any tax credit.
S corporation owners with more than 2% of the company can still take the deduction, but only after the corporation pays or reimburses the premiums and includes them in the owner’s W-2 wages.
On HealthCare.gov you can only buy a Marketplace dental plan when you are buying a health plan at the same time, which in Putnam County means one of its 58 2026 plans.
