Port St. Lucie has grown rapidly as a retirement and suburban destination on the Treasure Coast, with a large population of pre-Medicare retirees and remote workers — standalone dental coverage is a priority for many residents.
Families buy dental coverage for two different groups: children and adults. Adult dental care isn’t an essential health benefit under the ACA, so a health plan in Florida doesn’t have to include it. CMS lists 115 health plans for 2026 in Saint Lucie County from seven insurers; adult dental is an add-on to any of them, not a built-in benefit.
Adult Dental vs. Pediatric Dental in Saint Lucie County
Dental care is an essential health benefit for children, so with Marketplace coverage, dental must be available for anyone 18 or younger, either in the health plan or as a separate dental plan. Family plans put everyone on one policy but keep the benefits per person. On SecureDental PLUS, for example, each person has a $50 deductible, capped at $150 for the family, and cleanings and exams are covered in-network without it.

If braces are likely, read the orthodontia terms first: plenty of dental plans leave them out, and SecureDental PLUS limits them to the Premium tier, paying 70% after 12 months up to $500 a year and $1,500 over a lifetime.
Check waiting periods before you buy. HealthCare.gov notes that separate dental plans can have waiting periods before they cover services for adults; on SecureDental PLUS, basic care waits 1 month and major care and orthodontia 12 months, while cleanings have no wait.
A dental plan pays dentists, not emergency rooms. If a tooth infection or a facial injury takes you to an emergency department, that bill goes to your health insurance. In Saint Lucie County, Medicare’s hospital directory shows two hospitals with emergency departments, among them HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital and St. Lucie Medical Center.
