Dental Coverage in Utah County
Utah County is the heart of Silicon Slopes, home to BYU and a cluster of fast-growing tech companies — one of the youngest and fastest-growing counties in the nation, where many startup employees and self-employed tech workers buy dental and vision coverage on their own.
Under the ACA, dental care is an essential health benefit for children but not for adults. Utah County has 43 Marketplace health plans from five insurers for 2026 (BridgeSpan Health Company, Imperial Health Plan of the Southwest, Inc. and 3 others), and none of them has to cover adult dental care.
Keeping Your Dentist in Utah County
Before you choose a plan in Utah County, look up your dentist in the plan’s own provider directory and call the office to confirm it is in the specific network the plan uses. Networks change, and a practice can be in one insurer’s network but not another’s.
Most stand-alone dental plans are PPOs or HMOs. A dental PPO pays toward any licensed dentist but pays more in-network; a dental HMO usually costs less but only pays its own network dentists. If you want to keep a dentist you already see in Utah County, a PPO that includes the office is normally the better fit.
What Your Dental Plan Covers in Utah

Check waiting periods before you buy. HealthCare.gov notes that separate dental plans can have waiting periods before they cover services for adults; on SecureDental PLUS, basic care waits 1 month and major care and orthodontia 12 months, while cleanings have no wait.
A dental plan pays dentists, not emergency rooms. If a tooth infection or a facial injury takes you to an emergency department, that bill goes to your health insurance. In Utah County, Medicare’s hospital directory shows six hospitals with emergency departments, among them American Fork Hospital, Intermountain Health Spanish Fork Hospital and 4 others.
Getting Started with Dental Insurance in Utah County
HealthCare.gov only sells a dental plan together with a health plan (Utah County has 43 to choose from for 2026), during Open Enrollment or a special enrollment period. A stand-alone dental plan bought outside the Marketplace can start in any month, usually on the first of the following month. Price depends mainly on the tier and network; on SecureDental PLUS it doesn’t depend on age. One adult on its Premium tier with the National Options PPO 30 network was quoted $44.63 a month in Texas in August 2026, and lower tiers cost less. Where the plan is issued through its sponsoring association, a $7.95 monthly fee and a $10 one-time fee are added, and prices vary by state.
If you’re self-employed, dental premiums for yourself, a spouse and dependents generally count toward the self-employed health insurance deduction, which can’t exceed your business’s net profit, isn’t available for months you could join an employer-subsidized plan, and cuts income tax but not self-employment tax. Health premiums usually dominate it; in Utah County a 40-year-old’s 2026 benchmark Silver plan is $591 a month before any tax credit.
A stand-alone dental plan is an excepted benefit: it isn’t minimum essential coverage and doesn’t replace health insurance.
