Detailing has changed. Where the trade used to be one-off jobs booked week to week, a growing share of operators sell monthly maintenance memberships — and that shift makes a real difference to how confidently you can answer the marketplace's question about next year's income.

Memberships Make the Year Predictable

Forty members on a monthly plan is recurring revenue. It gives you a floor to estimate from, with one-off details, ceramic coatings and paint correction added on top as the variable part.

Operators still working purely job-to-job have the harder version of this problem and should plan on updating their estimate during the year rather than getting it right in November.

What $38,000 Qualifies For

At $38,000 of net profit, a single filer is about 243% of the 2026 poverty guideline of $15,650. That is inside subsidy range and, more usefully, just under a threshold most people have never heard of.

Below 250% of poverty, Silver plans carry cost-sharing reductions: the insurer lowers your deductible, copays and out-of-pocket maximum, at no additional premium. It is a substantial benefit and it exists only on Silver plans.

Sorting plans by premium alone hides it completely, and a Bronze plan that looks $40 cheaper each month can leave you thousands worse off in a year where you actually use it. At $38,000 you are inside that band; at $40,000 you would be outside it.

Subtract Before You Compare

Self-employment tax is $38,000 × 0.9235 × 0.153, roughly $5,369, of which about $2,685 is deductible, and your premiums come off too. At this income those subtractions can also affect which cost-sharing tier you fall into, so they are worth doing carefully rather than roughly.

Chemicals, Shoulders and Water

Detailing means solvents, degreasers and polishes in enclosed spaces, repetitive shoulder work, and long periods on wet concrete. An ACA plan cannot ask about any of it or price for it — coverage is guaranteed issue with no occupation questions.

What is worth checking is dermatology and respiratory access, and physical therapy visit limits, before choosing on premium alone.

Mobile or Shop Changes the Costs, Not the Rules

A mobile operator deducts vehicle and equipment costs; a shop operator deducts rent and utilities. Both reduce net profit and therefore both raise the credit. The rules are identical — only the expense lines differ.

The Deduction

With net self-employment profit and no employer plan available through a spouse, 100% of premiums come off on Schedule 1, Line 17, above the line, up to net self-employment income.
