Sign work sits between fabrication and installation, sells mostly to businesses, and gets paid on commercial terms. Each of those facts affects health coverage in a way that a purely residential trade never encounters.
Net-30 Terms Against a Monthly Premium
Commercial clients pay on their schedule, not yours. Net-30 becomes net-45 in practice, and a premium is due on the first regardless.
Coverage that lapses for non-payment cannot simply be restarted — you would be outside open enrollment with no qualifying life event, so there is no route back until the next enrollment period. Funding the premium from deposits rather than final payments is the practical fix, and taking a deposit on commercial work is normal in this trade.
Substrate and Vinyl Are Not Margin
Aluminium, acrylic, LED components, vinyl and paint can be a large share of an invoice, and on a channel-letter or pylon job so can the permit and the crane. The marketplace wants net profit after all of it, not the contract value.
Reporting invoice totals is the fastest way for a sign shop to overstate income and lose a credit it qualified for.
A Family of Three at $72,000
At $72,000 of net profit with a household of three, the 2026 poverty guideline is $26,650, so 400% is $106,600. That puts you around 270% — inside subsidy range, with the benchmark Silver contribution capped at 9.96% of income.
The same $72,000 as a single filer would be about 460% of $15,650 and would produce nothing at all. Household size is doing more work here than the income figure.
Subtract first: self-employment tax is $72,000 × 0.9235 × 0.153, roughly $10,173, so about $5,087 comes off, plus premiums.
Installation Is the Risky Half
Fabrication is shop work. Installation means ladders, lifts, occasionally a crane and often electrical connection. The plan cannot ask which you do — ACA coverage is guaranteed issue with no occupation questions — but if you do your own installs, the out-of-pocket maximum is the number that describes your worst case, more than the deductible does.
Permits and Delays Move Income Between Years
Sign permitting is slow and variable by municipality. A job approved in November and installed in February is next year's income, not this year's. On a small job count that genuinely shifts which side of a threshold you land on.
The Deduction
With no employer plan available through a spouse, 100% of premiums come off on Schedule 1, Line 17, above the line, up to net self-employment income.
