Cigna vs Humana Health Insurance

Individual, employer and Medicare coverage compared: what each company still sells in 2026, and what to buy when neither fits.

Short answer: in 2026 Cigna and Humana barely compete anywhere. Humana has sold no individual plans since the end of 2017 and no employer medical plans since 2025; its health insurance is now Medicare. Cigna sold its Medicare business in March 2025, and its individual marketplace plans end on December 31, 2026. So the right choice depends on which kind of coverage you need, and for most people under 65 buying their own plan in 2027 it will be neither. Individual and Family Plans

Cigna sells 2026 marketplace plans in 11 states, 9 of them where Daniel is licensed: Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia. It announced on April 30, 2026 that it is leaving the ACA individual market for 2027, affecting about 369,000 people, so those plans end on December 31. Humana has not sold individual plans since the end of 2017. For 2027, anyone buying their own coverage needs another insurer; Open Enrollment runs from November 1, and choosing by December 15 gets you coverage from January 1. What Cigna members need to do.

Employer Plans

Humana finished leaving employer medical coverage during 2025: fully insured, self-funded and federal employee plans. Cigna remains a large employer insurer but sells few small group plans; its own site lists traditional small group plans only in Arizona for new customers. For a business of any size, Humana is not an option. Cigna vs Humana for a small business.

Medicare

This is where the two diverge completely. Humana is one of the largest Medicare Advantage insurers and also sells Part D drug plans and Medicare Supplement. Cigna sold its Medicare Advantage, stand-alone Part D, Medicare Supplement and CareAllies businesses to Health Care Service Corporation (HCSC), which completed the purchase on March 19, 2025. Former Cigna Medicare plans are now run by HCSC. Daniel does not sell Medicare plans; this page covers them only so the comparison is complete.

Cigna Global Is a Different Product

Cigna Global is international private medical insurance for people living outside their home country. It is not a marketplace plan, does not qualify for U.S. tax credits and is not what a U.S. resident buys at home. Humana has no equivalent.

Choosing When Neither Fits

  1. Under 65, buying your own coverage: compare the insurers filed in your county for 2027. Most counties have two or more; networks and drug lists differ more than brand names.
  2. Healthy and above the tax-credit line: medically underwritten private coverage can price below the marketplace. The insurer asks health questions and can decline. How private health insurance works.
  3. A business: a small group plan from an insurer that sells one in your state, or an individual coverage HRA. How an ICHRA works.
  4. 65 or older: Medicare. Humana is one option among several.
