Short answer: Cigna will not sell individual and family health plans for 2027 in any of the 11 states where it sells them now, on or off the marketplace: Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia. Those plans end December 31, 2026. Pick a replacement by December 15 and it starts January 1 with no gap.
How Big the Exit Is
Cigna disclosed the decision with its first-quarter results on April 30, 2026. Its individual business covered about 369,000 people at the time, and KFF counts more than 350,000 enrolled through the marketplaces. It is the second large insurer to leave in two years: Aetna left the individual marketplace in every state at the end of 2025.
What Happens If You Do Nothing
On HealthCare.gov, a current enrollee who takes no action by December 15 is re-enrolled automatically. When the insurer is leaving, HealthCare.gov’s rule is that it “will re-enroll you in a plan with a different insurance company.” That plan is chosen for you. Its network, drug list and deductible can all differ from what you have, and you find out in January.
Colorado, Georgia, Illinois and Virginia run their own marketplaces and handle Cigna enrollees by their own rules. Your discontinuation letter says which applies to you.

Three Checks Before You Pick the Replacement
- Doctors and hospital. Networks are set plan by plan, so the same insurer can include your doctor in one plan and not the next (how to check a hospital).
- Prescriptions. Look up each drug and dose on the new plan’s 2027 drug list, including its tier and any prior approval rule.
- The worst year. Twelve months of premium plus the out-of-pocket maximum, which can now reach $12,000 for one person (the 2027 ceiling).
If You Bought Cigna Off the Marketplace
The same deadline applies: individual plans sold directly by insurers enroll on the same Open Enrollment calendar. Losing a plan because the insurer stops selling it also counts as a loss of coverage, which opens a special enrollment window around December 31. Choosing by December 15 is still the way to avoid a gap, because a special-period plan can start later than you need it to.
State-by-State Detail
Who else is leaving, and who is staying, in each state: Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, North Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia. If your letter says your plan is ending for another reason, start with what the three renewal letters mean.
Want the replacement chosen by you, not for you?
