Dental Coverage for Alexander County Families
Alexander County in far southern Illinois is one of the most economically distressed counties in the state, centered on Cairo at the confluence of the Mississippi and Ohio rivers — many residents rely on Medicaid or buy dental coverage on their own.
Families buy dental coverage for two different groups: children and adults. Health insurance and dental insurance are separate purchases for most adults, because adult dental isn’t an ACA essential health benefit. Alexander County residents shop for health plans on Get Covered Illinois, and adult dental still has to be bought separately.
Adult Dental vs. Pediatric Dental in Alexander County
Dental care is an essential health benefit for children, so with Marketplace coverage, dental must be available for anyone 18 or younger, either in the health plan or as a separate dental plan. Parents get no such guarantee. Check what your Get Covered Illinois plan already includes for the children before you buy a separate plan for them.
Family plans put everyone on one policy but keep the benefits per person. On SecureDental PLUS, for example, each person has a $50 deductible, capped at $150 for the family, and cleanings and exams are covered in-network without it.
Choosing a Family Dental Plan in Alexander County
No website can reliably tell you which dentists in Alexander County take a particular plan. Offices join and leave networks, so search the plan’s provider directory by the family’s dentists’ name and ZIP code, then call the office to confirm.
Braces are the most common surprise. On SecureDental PLUS they’re covered only on the Premium tier, at 70%, with a 12-month waiting period, a $500 yearly limit and a $1,500 lifetime limit, and many other plans don’t cover them at all.
If you already need a crown, the waiting period matters more than the premium. HealthCare.gov notes that separate dental plans can have waiting periods for adults, and SecureDental PLUS, for example, waits 12 months for major care and 1 month for basic care.
A dental plan pays dentists, not emergency rooms. If a tooth infection or a facial injury takes you to an emergency department, that bill goes to your health insurance. Alexander County has no hospital with emergency services in Medicare’s hospital directory, which makes it worth knowing which neighboring-county hospitals your health plan includes.
