Dental Coverage in Cook County

Cook County is the second-most populous county in the nation, anchoring Chicago's massive economy of finance, healthcare, hospitality, and tech — while large employers offer solid dental plans, the county's enormous restaurant, retail, and gig workforce often lacks employer dental benefits.

Health insurance and dental insurance are separate purchases for most adults, because adult dental isn’t an ACA essential health benefit. Whatever health plan you pick through Get Covered Illinois, adult dental coverage is a separate decision in Cook County.

Checking a Dentist’s Network in Cook County

Before you choose a plan in Cook County, look up your dentist in the plan’s own provider directory and call the office to confirm it is in the specific network the plan uses. Networks change, and a practice can be in one insurer’s network but not another’s.

The first choice is PPO or HMO. A dental HMO usually has the lower premium but only pays network dentists, often through an assigned office; a dental PPO still pays something out of network, which matters if your current dentist isn’t in any HMO near Cook County.

How Dental Insurance Works in Illinois

To put numbers on it, SecureDental PLUS, a plan Daniel places, pays basic care at 60% to 80% and major care at up to 70% depending on the tier, up to a yearly maximum of $1,000 to $2,000, and can be issued on the Careington, DenteMax or National Options PPO 30 network. The dental insurance guide sets out each tier.

Waiting periods are the catch. On SecureDental PLUS, cleanings are covered right away, fillings after 1 month, and crowns, bridges and orthodontia after 12 months, and HealthCare.gov warns that separate dental plans in general can have waiting periods for adults.

Serious dental emergencies, such as spreading infection or a broken jaw, are usually treated in a hospital and billed to health insurance rather than the dental plan. Medicare’s hospital directory lists 42 hospitals with emergency services in Cook County, including Advocate Christ Hospital & Medical Center, Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, Advocate Lutheran General Hospital and 39 others.

Signing Up for Dental Insurance in Illinois

Marketplace dental in Illinois runs through Get Covered Illinois rather than HealthCare.gov, and it is tied to the exchange’s enrollment periods. Off the Marketplace, a stand-alone dental plan isn’t tied to Open Enrollment at all. Put your ZIP code in the form below and Daniel will pull the dental plans sold at that address.

SecureDental PLUS pricing is set by tier, network and state, not age: the Premium tier on the National Options PPO 30 network came to $44.63 a month for one adult in a Texas quote in August 2026. Add a $7.95 monthly association fee and a $10 one-time fee where the plan is issued through its sponsoring association.

Self-employed? Dental premiums generally go into the self-employed health insurance deduction on Schedule 1, with the same limits as health premiums: no more than the business’s net profit, no months you were eligible for an employer-subsidized plan, and no reduction in self-employment tax.

Stand-alone dental plans are excepted benefits under federal law, so they don’t count as minimum essential coverage and never stand in for a health plan.
