Dental Coverage in Dupage County
DuPage County is one of the most affluent suburban counties in the Midwest, with a large population of corporate executives, small-business owners, and remote tech workers west of Chicago who often buy dental and vision coverage on their own.
Health insurance and dental insurance are separate purchases for most adults, because adult dental isn’t an ACA essential health benefit. In Dupage County that means choosing a health plan on Get Covered Illinois first and treating adult dental as its own purchase.
Checking a Dentist’s Network in Dupage County
No website can reliably tell you which dentists in Dupage County take a particular plan. Offices join and leave networks, so search the plan’s provider directory by the dentist’s name and ZIP code, then call the office to confirm.
The first choice is PPO or HMO. A dental HMO usually has the lower premium but only pays network dentists, often through an assigned office; a dental PPO still pays something out of network, which matters if your current dentist isn’t in any HMO near Dupage County.
How Dental Insurance Works in Illinois

Waiting periods are the catch. On SecureDental PLUS, cleanings are covered right away, fillings after 1 month, and crowns, bridges and orthodontia after 12 months, and HealthCare.gov warns that separate dental plans in general can have waiting periods for adults.
Serious dental emergencies, such as spreading infection or a broken jaw, are usually treated in a hospital and billed to health insurance rather than the dental plan. In Dupage County, Medicare’s hospital directory shows six hospitals with emergency departments, among them Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital, Edward Hospital and 4 others.
Signing Up for Dental Insurance in Illinois
In Illinois the Marketplace is Get Covered Illinois, which offers dental plans next to its health plans during Open Enrollment and special enrollment periods. A stand-alone dental plan bought outside the Marketplace can start in any month, usually on the first of the following month. Price depends mainly on the tier and network; on SecureDental PLUS it doesn’t depend on age. One adult on its Premium tier with the National Options PPO 30 network was quoted $44.63 a month in Texas in August 2026, and lower tiers cost less. Where the plan is issued through its sponsoring association, a $7.95 monthly fee and a $10 one-time fee are added, and prices vary by state.
For the self-employed, dental premiums usually qualify for the self-employed health insurance deduction. It lowers income tax, not self-employment tax, is capped at the business’s net profit, and is lost for any month you could have joined an employer-subsidized plan.
Stand-alone dental plans are excepted benefits under federal law, so they don’t count as minimum essential coverage and never stand in for a health plan.
