Dental Coverage for the Self-Employed in Harris County
Harris County and Houston are the energy capital of the world — but alongside the oil companies and petrochemical plants, Houston has a massive service economy of restaurant workers, retail staff, and healthcare support workers who often lack employer dental benefits.
Working for yourself means no group dental plan to join. Adult dental care isn’t an essential health benefit under the ACA, so a health plan in Texas doesn’t have to include it. CMS lists 121 health plans for 2026 in Harris County from seven insurers; adult dental is an add-on to any of them, not a built-in benefit.
What a Standalone Dental Plan Covers for Harris County Freelancers
As a real example, SecureDental PLUS, one of the dental plans Daniel places, comes in three tiers paying basic care at 60%, 70% or 80% and major care at discount-only, 60% or 70%, with yearly maximums of $1,000, $1,500 or $2,000 and a choice of PPO networks. The dental insurance guide has the full table.
Waiting periods are the catch. On SecureDental PLUS, cleanings are covered right away, fillings after 1 month, and crowns, bridges and orthodontia after 12 months, and HealthCare.gov warns that separate dental plans in general can have waiting periods for adults.
Enrollment Options for Self-Employed Dental in Harris County
HealthCare.gov only sells a dental plan together with a health plan (Harris County has 121 to choose from for 2026), during Open Enrollment or a special enrollment period. Outside the Marketplace there is no enrollment window for stand-alone dental, and coverage usually starts the first of the next month. Put your ZIP code in the form below and Daniel will pull the dental plans sold at that address.
SecureDental PLUS pricing is set by tier, network and state, not age: the Premium tier on the National Options PPO 30 network came to $44.63 a month for one adult in a Texas quote in August 2026. Add a $7.95 monthly association fee and a $10 one-time fee where the plan is issued through its sponsoring association.
Self-employed? Dental premiums generally go into the self-employed health insurance deduction on Schedule 1, with the same limits as health premiums: no more than the business’s net profit, no months you were eligible for an employer-subsidized plan, and no reduction in self-employment tax. Health premiums usually dominate it; in Harris County a 40-year-old’s 2026 benchmark Silver plan is $592 a month before any tax credit.
Serious dental emergencies, such as spreading infection or a broken jaw, are usually treated in a hospital and billed to health insurance rather than the dental plan. In Harris County, Medicare’s hospital directory shows 33 hospitals with emergency departments, among them Ad Hospital East, LLC, Altus Houston Hospital, LP and 31 others.
