Dental Coverage in Montgomery County
Montgomery County in central Illinois is a small agricultural and manufacturing community centered on Hillsboro — many residents buy dental coverage on their own.
Adult dental care isn’t an essential health benefit under the ACA, so a health plan in Illinois doesn’t have to include it. In Montgomery County that means choosing a health plan on Get Covered Illinois first and treating adult dental as its own purchase.
Checking a Dentist’s Network in Montgomery County
Before you choose a plan in Montgomery County, look up your dentist in the plan’s own provider directory and call the office to confirm it is in the specific network the plan uses. Networks change, and a practice can be in one insurer’s network but not another’s.
The first choice is PPO or HMO. A dental HMO usually has the lower premium but only pays network dentists, often through an assigned office; a dental PPO still pays something out of network, which matters if your current dentist isn’t in any HMO near Montgomery County.
How Dental Insurance Works in Illinois
One plan Daniel places, SecureDental PLUS, shows the trade-offs: its lowest tier covers major care only at a discount, its top tier pays 70% for major care and orthodontia, and yearly maximums run from $1,000 to $2,000. The dental insurance guide compares the tiers.
Check waiting periods before you buy. HealthCare.gov notes that separate dental plans can have waiting periods before they cover services for adults; on SecureDental PLUS, basic care waits 1 month and major care and orthodontia 12 months, while cleanings have no wait.
A dental plan pays dentists, not emergency rooms. If a tooth infection or a facial injury takes you to an emergency department, that bill goes to your health insurance. Medicare’s hospital directory lists 2 hospitals with emergency services in Montgomery County, including Hillsboro Area Hospital and St. Francis Hospital. Two of the county’s hospitals are critical access hospitals, the small rural facilities Medicare designates to keep emergency care close.
Signing Up for Dental Insurance in Illinois
In Illinois the Marketplace is Get Covered Illinois, which offers dental plans next to its health plans during Open Enrollment and special enrollment periods. Outside the Marketplace there is no enrollment window for stand-alone dental, and coverage usually starts the first of the next month. Enter your ZIP code in the form below and Daniel will send you the dental plans available where you live.
SecureDental PLUS pricing is set by tier, network and state, not age: the Premium tier on the National Options PPO 30 network came to $44.63 a month for one adult in a Texas quote in August 2026. Add a $7.95 monthly association fee and a $10 one-time fee where the plan is issued through its sponsoring association.
Self-employed? Dental premiums generally go into the self-employed health insurance deduction on Schedule 1, with the same limits as health premiums: no more than the business’s net profit, no months you were eligible for an employer-subsidized plan, and no reduction in self-employment tax.
Stand-alone dental plans are excepted benefits under federal law, so they don’t count as minimum essential coverage and never stand in for a health plan.
Call (713) 575-9904 and Daniel will send the dental plans sold in Montgomery County and check your provider against each network.
