Dental Coverage in Scott County
Scott County in western Illinois is a small agricultural community centered on Winchester — many residents buy dental coverage on their own.
Adult dental care isn’t an essential health benefit under the ACA, so a health plan in Illinois doesn’t have to include it. In Scott County that means choosing a health plan on Get Covered Illinois first and treating adult dental as its own purchase.
Finding a Dentist in Scott County
No website can reliably tell you which dentists in Scott County take a particular plan. Offices join and leave networks, so search the plan’s provider directory by the dentist’s name and ZIP code, then call the office to confirm.
Dental PPOs let you see any licensed dentist and pay more when the office is in-network. Dental HMOs trade that freedom for a lower premium and a closed network. For most people in Scott County the deciding question is simply whether their dentist is in the network.
Understanding Your Dental Benefits in Illinois
To put numbers on it, SecureDental PLUS, a plan Daniel places, pays basic care at 60% to 80% and major care at up to 70% depending on the tier, up to a yearly maximum of $1,000 to $2,000, and can be issued on the Careington, DenteMax or National Options PPO 30 network. The dental insurance guide sets out each tier.
Waiting periods are the catch. On SecureDental PLUS, cleanings are covered right away, fillings after 1 month, and crowns, bridges and orthodontia after 12 months, and HealthCare.gov warns that separate dental plans in general can have waiting periods for adults.
Serious dental emergencies, such as spreading infection or a broken jaw, are usually treated in a hospital and billed to health insurance rather than the dental plan. Medicare’s hospital directory lists no hospital with emergency services in Scott County itself, so the nearest emergency department may be in a neighboring county.
Your Enrollment Options in Scott County
Get Covered Illinois, the state-run exchange in Illinois, sells dental plans alongside its health plans during enrollment periods, and its rules decide whether dental can be added on its own. Off the Marketplace, a stand-alone dental plan isn’t tied to Open Enrollment at all. Use the ZIP code form below and Daniel will send you the dental options for your address.
Price depends mainly on the tier and network; on SecureDental PLUS it doesn’t depend on age. One adult on its Premium tier with the National Options PPO 30 network was quoted $44.63 a month in Texas in August 2026, and lower tiers cost less. Where the plan is issued through its sponsoring association, a $7.95 monthly fee and a $10 one-time fee are added, and prices vary by state.
Self-employed? Dental premiums generally go into the self-employed health insurance deduction on Schedule 1, with the same limits as health premiums: no more than the business’s net profit, no months you were eligible for an employer-subsidized plan, and no reduction in self-employment tax.
A stand-alone dental plan is an excepted benefit: it isn’t minimum essential coverage and doesn’t replace health insurance.
