For a family, the rules differ for the kids and the parents. Adult dental care isn’t an essential health benefit under the ACA, so a health plan in Texas doesn’t have to include it. Of the 128 health plans sold in Tarrant County for 2026, from Ambetter from Superior HealthPlan, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas, Cigna Healthcare and 5 others, none is required to include adult dental coverage.
Adult Dental vs. Pediatric Dental in Tarrant County
Children and adults are treated differently: a Marketplace health plan must make dental coverage available for children 18 and under, in the plan itself or as a separate dental plan, while adult dental is optional. Check which of Tarrant County’s 128 2026 health plans already include children’s dental before you buy a separate plan for them.
A family dental plan covers each enrolled person under one policy, with the same preventive, basic and major classes of care as an individual plan. Deductibles usually apply per person with a family cap: $50 a person up to $150 a family on SecureDental PLUS.
Choosing a Family Dental Plan in Tarrant County
No website can reliably tell you which dentists in Tarrant County take a particular plan. Offices join and leave networks, so search the plan’s provider directory by the family’s dentists’ name and ZIP code, then call the office to confirm.
Orthodontia is where family plans differ most. Many exclude braces or cover them only on higher tiers; SecureDental PLUS covers orthodontia only on its Premium tier, at 70% after a 12-month wait, up to $500 a year and $1,500 lifetime.
Waiting periods are the catch. On SecureDental PLUS, cleanings are covered right away, fillings after 1 month, and crowns, bridges and orthodontia after 12 months, and HealthCare.gov warns that separate dental plans in general can have waiting periods for adults.
Know where the line sits: a dental plan covers care in a dentist’s chair, while an emergency department visit for a dental abscess or a jaw injury is a health insurance claim. Medicare’s hospital directory lists 23 hospitals with emergency services in Tarrant County, including Baylor Scott & White Medical Center Grapevine, Baylor Scott and White All Saints Medical Center, Baylor Scott and White Orthopedic and Spine Hospi and 20 others.
