Volusia County combines the Daytona Beach tourism and motorsport economy with a large retirement population in Deltona and DeLand — a diverse county where hospitality workers and retirees alike commonly buy dental coverage on their own.
For a family, the rules differ for the kids and the parents. Adult dental care isn’t an essential health benefit under the ACA, so a health plan in Florida doesn’t have to include it. Of the 154 health plans sold in Volusia County for 2026, from Ambetter Health, Florida Blue (BlueCross BlueShield FL), Florida Blue HMO (a BlueCross BlueShield FL company) and 5 others, none is required to include adult dental coverage.
What Family Dental Plans Cover in Volusia County
Family plans put everyone on one policy but keep the benefits per person. On SecureDental PLUS, for example, each person has a $50 deductible, capped at $150 for the family, and cleanings and exams are covered in-network without it.
Orthodontia is where family plans differ most. Many exclude braces or cover them only on higher tiers; SecureDental PLUS covers orthodontia only on its Premium tier, at 70% after a 12-month wait, up to $500 a year and $1,500 lifetime.

HealthCare.gov only sells a dental plan together with a health plan (Volusia County has 154 to choose from for 2026), during Open Enrollment or a special enrollment period. A stand-alone dental plan bought outside the Marketplace can start in any month, usually on the first of the following month. If you already need a crown, the waiting period matters more than the premium. HealthCare.gov notes that separate dental plans can have waiting periods for adults, and SecureDental PLUS, for example, waits 12 months for major care and 1 month for basic care.
Know where the line sits: a dental plan covers care in a dentist’s chair, while an emergency department visit for a dental abscess or a jaw injury is a health insurance claim. In Volusia County, Medicare’s hospital directory shows six hospitals with emergency departments, among them AdventHealth Daytona Beach, AdventHealth Deland and 4 others.
A stand-alone dental plan is an excepted benefit: it isn’t minimum essential coverage and doesn’t replace health insurance.
