Dental Coverage in Washington County
Washington County in southern Illinois is a small agricultural community centered on Nashville — many residents buy dental coverage on their own.
Adult dental care isn’t an essential health benefit under the ACA, so a health plan in Illinois doesn’t have to include it. In Washington County that means choosing a health plan on Get Covered Illinois first and treating adult dental as its own purchase.
Keeping Your Dentist in Washington County
No website can reliably tell you which dentists in Washington County take a particular plan. Offices join and leave networks, so search the plan’s provider directory by the dentist’s name and ZIP code, then call the office to confirm.
Most stand-alone dental plans are PPOs or HMOs. A dental PPO pays toward any licensed dentist but pays more in-network; a dental HMO usually costs less but only pays its own network dentists. If you want to keep a dentist you already see in Washington County, a PPO that includes the office is normally the better fit.
What Your Dental Plan Covers in Illinois
As a real example, SecureDental PLUS, one of the dental plans Daniel places, comes in three tiers paying basic care at 60%, 70% or 80% and major care at discount-only, 60% or 70%, with yearly maximums of $1,000, $1,500 or $2,000 and a choice of PPO networks. The dental insurance guide has the full table.
Waiting periods are the catch. On SecureDental PLUS, cleanings are covered right away, fillings after 1 month, and crowns, bridges and orthodontia after 12 months, and HealthCare.gov warns that separate dental plans in general can have waiting periods for adults.
Know where the line sits: a dental plan covers care in a dentist’s chair, while an emergency department visit for a dental abscess or a jaw injury is a health insurance claim. The only hospital with emergency services that Medicare lists in Washington County is Washington County Hospital, so check that your health plan includes it. One of the county’s hospitals is a critical access hospital, the small rural facilities Medicare designates to keep emergency care close.
Getting Started with Dental Insurance in Washington County
Marketplace dental in Illinois runs through Get Covered Illinois rather than HealthCare.gov, and it is tied to the exchange’s enrollment periods. Outside the Marketplace there is no enrollment window for stand-alone dental, and coverage usually starts the first of the next month. Put your ZIP code in the form below and Daniel will pull the dental plans sold at that address.
SecureDental PLUS pricing is set by tier, network and state, not age: the Premium tier on the National Options PPO 30 network came to $44.63 a month for one adult in a Texas quote in August 2026. Add a $7.95 monthly association fee and a $10 one-time fee where the plan is issued through its sponsoring association.
If you’re self-employed, dental premiums for yourself, a spouse and dependents generally count toward the self-employed health insurance deduction, which can’t exceed your business’s net profit, isn’t available for months you could join an employer-subsidized plan, and cuts income tax but not self-employment tax.
A stand-alone dental plan is an excepted benefit: it isn’t minimum essential coverage and doesn’t replace health insurance.
Call (713) 575-9904 and Daniel will send the dental plans sold in Washington County and check your provider against each network.
