Dental Coverage in Lake County

Lake County stretches along Lake Michigan north of Chicago, with a striking contrast between affluent communities like Lake Forest and working-class cities like Waukegan — the county's large Latino population and service workforce often buys dental coverage on their own.

Health insurance and dental insurance are separate purchases for most adults, because adult dental isn’t an ACA essential health benefit. Whatever health plan you pick through Get Covered Illinois, adult dental coverage is a separate decision in Lake County.

Checking a Dentist’s Network in Lake County

No website can reliably tell you which dentists in Lake County take a particular plan. Offices join and leave networks, so search the plan’s provider directory by the dentist’s name and ZIP code, then call the office to confirm.

Most stand-alone dental plans are PPOs or HMOs. A dental PPO pays toward any licensed dentist but pays more in-network; a dental HMO usually costs less but only pays its own network dentists. If you want to keep a dentist you already see in Lake County, a PPO that includes the office is normally the better fit.

How Dental Insurance Works in Illinois

As a real example, SecureDental PLUS, one of the dental plans Daniel places, comes in three tiers paying basic care at 60%, 70% or 80% and major care at discount-only, 60% or 70%, with yearly maximums of $1,000, $1,500 or $2,000 and a choice of PPO networks. The dental insurance guide has the full table.

Waiting periods are the catch. On SecureDental PLUS, cleanings are covered right away, fillings after 1 month, and crowns, bridges and orthodontia after 12 months, and HealthCare.gov warns that separate dental plans in general can have waiting periods for adults.

A dental plan pays dentists, not emergency rooms. If a tooth infection or a facial injury takes you to an emergency department, that bill goes to your health insurance. Medicare’s hospital directory lists 5 hospitals with emergency services in Lake County, including Advocate Condell Medical Center, Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital, Midwestern Region Medical Center and 2 others.

Signing Up for Dental Insurance in Illinois

In Illinois the Marketplace is Get Covered Illinois, which offers dental plans next to its health plans during Open Enrollment and special enrollment periods. A stand-alone dental plan bought outside the Marketplace can start in any month, usually on the first of the following month. Put your ZIP code in the form below and Daniel will pull the dental plans sold at that address.

Price depends mainly on the tier and network; on SecureDental PLUS it doesn’t depend on age. One adult on its Premium tier with the National Options PPO 30 network was quoted $44.63 a month in Texas in August 2026, and lower tiers cost less. Where the plan is issued through its sponsoring association, a $7.95 monthly fee and a $10 one-time fee are added, and prices vary by state.

If you’re self-employed, dental premiums for yourself, a spouse and dependents generally count toward the self-employed health insurance deduction, which can’t exceed your business’s net profit, isn’t available for months you could join an employer-subsidized plan, and cuts income tax but not self-employment tax.

A stand-alone dental plan is an excepted benefit: it isn’t minimum essential coverage and doesn’t replace health insurance.
